Children's care services

In addition to our domiciliary care services for adults, Reliance Community Care also provides care for children with special education needs and disabilities (SEND), or long-term health conditions, who live at home with their family or guardian.

We can also assist with children's palliative care for those under 16 years old who are sadly diagnosed with a terminal illness, providing vital physical and emotional support to both the child and their loved ones.

We know that one of the most vital components of our children's care services, is the care we provide to their families too. We can provide overnight care (including sleep-in care), respite care, short breaks, advocacy and liaison services, and valuable companionship and emotional support to both your child and the whole family.

What are children's care services?

Children's care services, or care services for children, usually refers to domiciliary care provided to children and young people under 16 years of age.

This is different to child social care or children's services, which refers to the support provided to families to protect vulnerable children, including foster care or alternative care arrangements, and child care, which usually refers to educational day care services such as childminders and nurseries.

Our domiciliary carers for children can help with:

  • Personal care, including toileting and continence management
  • Managing challenging behaviours
  • Managing medications or complex care
  • Social inclusion, including socialising and access to community activities
  • Mobility and the use of aids and equipment
  • Accessing school or further study
  • Overnight and respite care, including short breaks
  • Providing companionship and emotional support, both to the child and their family or guardian

We have experience in supporting children with a diverse range of backgrounds and conditions, including:

  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Down Syndrome
  • Brain and neurological conditions, including acquired brain injury
  • Neurodivergent conditions, including autistic spectrum disorders (ASD), Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and learning disabilities
  • Mental health needs
  • Sensory impairments
  • Physical disabilities
  • Cancer and other long-term or terminal illnesses
  • Complex care needs

At Reliance Community Care we know that finding the right carer for a child with additional needs, or children's palliative care at home, can be life-changing. We work closely, not only with your family, but with your child's wider care team, to ensure that we provide the right level of care for you and your child.

Depending on your child's condition, this may include:

  • community paediatricians
  • occupational therapists
  • speech and language therapists
  • physiotherapists
  • educational psychologists
  • dieticians
  • social care teams
  • other specialist medical professionals
  • special educational needs co-ordinators (SENCOs) and teachers

We believe it's vital for our person-centred care plans to be based on your child's own needs and preferences, no matter how they communicate. That's why our teams are experienced in using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) supports such as British Sign Language (BSL), Makaton and Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS), to ensure that your child's personal wishes and choices are respected at all times.
